It is not everyday that you get to go into the desert on a two lane road s d see something right out of the Wild West. That was what we did today. Leaving the house right after lunch, we headed through the city of Tucson on our way north. This time we did not take the 10 and decided to take a much more scenic route and took the 79. This was a great choice. The road was so wonderful and the scenery of mountains and cacti really set the mood.
Once well on 79 we figured we better get ready for the off road portion of the trip. We had to make a u turn because the road came up on us pretty quickly. After we turned around , we headed into 96 Ranch Road. A gravel/ dirt road led is over cattle guards and on switch back roads deep into nowhere. I must say it was a little unnerving yet cool.
Several miles later we came upon the 96 Ranch a once working with several abandoned buildings. Won't go into major detail of all the buildings so you can enjoy the pictures but there were several different structures including a cold cellar, home, barn, a cottage, maybe a slaughterhouse, and other buildings that were there. We actually met a couple guys there who were planning an Easter dinner and egg hunt for their family tomorrow. They were "borrowing" the location. How freaking cool?
Looks like the place closed down about twenty years ago and now the sun, foliage and bees have made it home. PS lots of bees except for the one I killed that tried to attack me. Sorry but that isn't cool to go after an innocent girl trying to take photos of things.
The way out of the area met us with all sorts of off road travelers having fun in the desert sun. Windows open, music blaring, we headed back towards time Catalina Foothills for dinner and to pack for our next adventurous road trip. More to come!
