While on the OUter Banks, it is custom to go to the Jockey's Ridge dunes. These are the largest living dunes on the east coast and are ever changing season after season. The winds, storms, etc... have changed the hills, sloping up and down, giving many visitors the chance to climb, slide, and fly kites and even hang glide. We haver visited them many times, however, this past summer we were unable to go due to how hot it was and our time restraints. SO, since we are on the Outer Banks in November, the weather is beauteous, 64 degrees, we decided to give them a try. It was too windy to fly the kite we had bought at Kitty Hawk Kites, right across the boulevard, but we decided to climb the dunes and see the view.
Not only did we get a beautiful view of the ocean and the sound, but we found a hidden treasure. Seems that many years ago, right next to the dunes there was once a mini golf course. Over the years, the winds shifted the sands from the dunes and covered said mini golf. But, alas, a shift in the winds yet again has uncovered some of the mini golf course. So, while we walked up the dunes, hiking through soft, cool light brown sands, observing the way the winds and recent rains have made ripples in the sand, Little Leader yells, "Hey, guys, come here, I found a castle." We both kind of thought she was using that broad imagination again, but as we approached the mound of sand and wood in front of us,we saw it as clear as day. There, standing right in the middle of the dunes were the remnants of a once majestic mini gold castle. I could imagine the little tykes swinging the club far too hard, adults ducking and wincing at the attempts to get that stinking small colorful ball in that tiny hole. It was exciting, I will not lie. Then we looked it up online, and there we found that it has been revealing itself slowly but surely for many years. We were delighted we caught a glimpse of this once colorful, fun filled momento of the past.
We continued to walk the dunes, promising to return this evening to watch the sunset. And then we realized, maybe we should come back more often. I wonder what else is buried under Jockey's Ridge????
