Back at it!! Yippee!!!! We were not planning on doing anything special because of football. I wasn't really upset about it, but on the other hand, when I got a phone call from my husband and he said,"Today is far too beautiful to stay indoors. Let's adventure!!!!" Off we went. The drive south was lovely and for a while, while in Somerset? We saw some leaves of red, orange and gold. I love Fall! We stopped at a classic little diner called the Summit Diner, decked out with Pink Ladies serving and a classic car show on the back. Perfection! Plus, they made a mean burger with butcher on site. Top that with an over medium egg and crispy bacon, no. In and I was a pig in shit!!!
A couple hours later we arrived in Harpers Ferry. Needless to say, we were pleasantly surprised of the quaint atmosphere and the amount of tourists walking the streets. We first drove up hills to see the Hilltop House Hotel. It was fenced off but breaks in the fencing gave us a great view of nature's reclaim on the establishment and the crumbling exterior. The wrought iron gates and fencing looped around the entire establishment. Built over 100 years ago, it had recently been bought to bring it back to life, but it never really happened. A couple we met that were checking out the view above the valley spoke of many vacations to Thai very spot and the amazing meals they ate while staying there. Across the street was a small more cabin like motelly place. Obviously a part of the original hotel bug added later, this too was fenced off but the gate was unlocked. Sry quickly and quietly k was able to sneak in and take some great shots. The steps were very deteriorated so I didn't dare try to climb them or enter any rooms as they were boarded up, but I did get close enough to then be able to sneak around back and check the whole thing out. Not only was the place very cool, but the view was overwhelmingly beautiful!!!
We exited, drive a few minutes to the Episcopal Church ruins. They were amazing. Though berry deteriorates they were easily accessible and were wide open. We were able to climb and walk along the walls. This place made sassy posing a MUST!! The view was incredible and we stayed until others came and we decided we should give someone else the chance to take advantage of this gem of a find.
We left and switch backed brought narrow streets. In unison we decided this place was like the Jerome, Arizona of the east. Crazy architecture, unique shops and cafes and restaurants and amazing history. The streets felt the same and that made us anxious for our December west trip. Until then, we will love up on the East's abandoned locations. So much abandonment, so little time!!!
